Extract from 'The Bowkers of
Tharfield' by Ivan Mitford-Barberton: While
the dinner was being prepared Holden was surprised to hear a child
crying. He went to investigate and found Kaffir baby boy in an
ant-bear's hole with a flat stone placed over the entrance. The
child. about 2 years old, half dead from exposure and starvation, had
evidently been abandoned there by his mother while fleeing from the
Fetcani. Holden fed the child and rode to 'Tharfield' with him tied
on his back in the Kaffir manner. The boy was given to one of the
Kaffir women on 'Tharfield' who had a small child of her own, with the
promise of a cow if he survived. He did survive and was named
Resurrection Jack and eventually became a house boy. Although a
inveterate food thief, he proved on the whole a good and faithful
servant and followed the family fortunes for many years. When he
was about 70 years old he came to see his old mistress Mrs. W. M. Bowker
at 'Thorn Kloof'.
