Frank had a lot of old family letters and other Bowker documents which he proposed giving to the Albany Museum, where they were going to be placed in a 'Bowker Case' which was to be made specially for this purpose.  Together with these papers it was his intention to have portraits of all the sons and daughter of old Miles the Settler.  Unfortunately there are no portraits in existence of old Settler Miles and his eldest son John Mitford, but of the rest of his family we have photographs and also of his wife, Anna Maria Mitford, and portraits of these have been painted by W. G.  Bevington and reporductions appear in this book.

Extract from 'The Bowkers of Tharfield' by Ivan Mitford-Barberton:
Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of Benjie Bowker is that he possesses a marvellous memory for dates and events.  He is also something of a recluse, travels only rarely, and prefers to stay on his farm.  A keen naturalist, he knows all the local wild birds and takes a much greater interest in them than in farming stock of any kind.  He has an interesting collection of relics, among them some Bushman stone arrow-heads.  Amongst a collection of old wines he keeps an even more interesting relic.  When Halley's comet appeared in 1910 and we were told the hour and minute that the earth would be passing through its tail, Benjie swept and empty jam-jar through the air and bottle some of the tail!  This unique, invisible specimen is more than likely the only part of the comet that is still with us!

Extract from 'The Bowkers of Tharfield' by Ivan Mitford-Barberton:
Her mother was an Oosthuisen and two of her brothers Martinue and Gerrit, who were twins and about 17 years old, were with Retief's party.  Thier grandfather, also named Martinue, was Adjutant to Retielf.  He and Gerrit were murdered with the rest of Retief's party by Dingaan, but the youn Martinus escaped as he had been sent back to the wagons by his grandfather.  Martinus was one of the boy heroes of the Voortrekkers, for it was at van Rensburg Koppie in Natal that he galloped through the Zulu lines amid flying assegais to bring gunpowder to a besieged party of Voortrekkers who had almost reached the ene of their supply.  Martinus's timely arrival undoubtedly saved the lives of all those in this party.
